What to Wear on a Royal Caribbean Cruise

Theme Nights + Dress Your Best — Without Buying a Thing

So you've booked your Royal Caribbean cruise — welcome to the club! And then the email arrives. You know the one. It's brimming with theme nights: 70s, 80s, Caribbean Night, Latin Party… and suddenly the packing stress is very real.

Here's the good news: you almost certainly already own everything you need. I'm heading out on Navigator of the Seas this April for the Mexican Riviera, and when I got the theme night email, I sat down and figured out exactly how to pull this off without touching a single shopping cart. This post is what I came up with.

Grab a coffee. Let's talk outfits. 👗

First: How Many Nights Are We Talking?

Your Royal Caribbean sailing will include theme nights AND Dress Your Best nights. Here's the breakdown for Dress Your Best:

4–5 night sailing: 1 Dress Your Best night

6–10 night sailing: 2 Dress Your Best nights

On a 7-night cruise like mine, that's 4 theme nights + 2 glam nights = 6 outfit moments to plan. Totally doable — especially with a little strategy.

🕺 70s Night: Groovy Without the Shopping Spree

The 70s were all about fun, flair, and a little drama — and you can fake the whole look with what's hanging in your closet right now.

•Wide-leg pants or flowy trousers (any solid color reads as "bell-bottom adjacent")

•A silky or boldly patterned blouse

•Big hoop earrings + oversized sunglasses — you definitely already have these

•Any chunky-heeled sandal stands in perfectly for platform shoes

The secret weapon of 70s style? Confidence. Put it on and own it. 😄

🌺 Caribbean Night: Tropical Vibes, Zero Effort

This one is almost unfair how easy it is. Dig out your brightest, most vacation-y pieces and you're done.

•A floral sundress or tropical-print top

•Linen pants + a colorful blouse if dresses aren't your thing

•Flip flops or strappy sandals

•A flower for your hair — this does SO much work for very little effort

Bonus: this is the most comfortable theme night of them all. You'll be dancing on the Royal Promenade, so dress to move!

💃 Latin Party: White, Light, and Flowy

Royal Caribbean specifically says to think casual, light, and flowy — with white being the go-to color. This might actually be the easiest theme of the bunch.

•A white sundress, white linen pants, or a simple white blouse

•Gold jewelry keeps the look polished without overdoing it

•Comfortable sandals or low heels — you'll be dancing to salsa, bachata, and reggaeton all night!

Don't overthink this one. White + movement + good music = magic.

🎸 80s Night: Raid Your Jewelry Box

Here's where you get to have the most fun. The 80s were loud, layered, and gloriously over the top — which means almost anything goes.

•Bright colors, bold patterns, anything neon

•Scrunchies, crimped hair, big earrings — the more, the better

•Leggings + an off-shoulder top = instant 80s

•Layer ALL the accessories. Seriously. More is more.

If you're only going to buy one thing for any of these nights, let it be a pack of scrunchies and some colorful accessories from the dollar section. That's genuinely all you need.

💎 Dress Your Best (x2 Nights): Your Time to Shine

This is your moment — and it doesn't require a brand-new gown. Pull out the cocktail dress that makes you feel like a million dollars. Wear the outfit that's been waiting for the right occasion.

•Night 1: Your favorite dress or dressy ensemble

•Night 2: Same outfit, different accessories — swap your jewelry and bag for a fresh look

Nobody on that ship is keeping track. They're all too busy having fun.

✨ A Few Packing Tips Before You Zip That Bag

•Check the Royal Caribbean app before you pack — find the theme nights in the Daily Planner under "All" to confirm which night is which

•Pack versatile pieces that work for multiple themes (a floral dress can do Caribbean Night AND be your resort casual fallback)

•One small bag of fun accessories — clip earrings, a silk scarf, a sparkly headband — covers you for all four theme nights

•Resort casual (jeans, sundresses, polos) is always acceptable if you'd rather skip the costumes — no pressure!

Planning a Cruise? I've Got a Guide for That 📚

If you're heading to the Mexican Riviera — or dreaming about it — I put together a printable cruise guide covering Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta. It's packed with excursion ideas, port tips, and everything you need to make the most of every stop. You can find it in my PlanTheMagicGuides shop on Etsy.

Now go enjoy every single theme night — sequins, scrunchies, and all. 🌊✨
