Mazatlán: Our Favorite Port — A Day in the Pearl of the Pacific with Ruben
If someone asked me which port on our Mexican Riviera cruise was my favorite, I wouldn't even hesitate. Mazatlán. Hands down. No contest. It was authentic, surprising, full of history and character — and honestly it's a city I would go back to in a heartbeat. A friend of my daughter's recently moved there and absolutely loves it, and after spending a day there I completely understand why.
But here's the thing — I truly believe our experience was as special as it was because of one person. Our pulmonia driver Ruben. More on him in a moment.

Arriving in Mazatlán — No Tender Required!
After the tender experience in Cabo San Lucas, one of the first things I noticed about Mazatlán was that the Navigator of the Seas docked directly at the pier. No tender boats, no bobbing around in the waves trying to board — just walk off the ship and you're there. If you've ever done a tender port you know what a relief that is!
That said — the moment you step outside the port gates you will be greeted by a very enthusiastic crowd of taxi drivers 😄 eager for your business, all competing loudly for your attention. It feels overwhelming at first but just take a breath, walk past them all with purpose and head out to the road. If you've booked ahead — and I strongly recommend you do — your driver will be waiting right there holding a sign with your name on it.
That's exactly what happened to us. Jesus, the owner of Pulmonia City Tour Mazatlan, was standing right there at the road holding a sign with our name on it. The owner himself came to meet us personally — that kind of customer care immediately told us we were in good hands. Then Ruben pulled up in the pulmonia, we climbed in and just like that our Mazatlán adventure began.
Pro tip: Search for Pulmonia City Tour Mazatlan with Jesus on Facebook to book ahead. We paid $100 for our group though we later heard from a fellow cruiser that she negotiated $90 for hers — so the price is flexible. Either way it's an incredible value for what turned out to be nearly 5 hours of personalized local touring. And remember — that fare goes entirely to Jesus who runs the company. Ruben works purely for tips so please tip your driver generously. We gave $20 and honestly wish we had given more. You'll understand why by the end of this post.
What is a Pulmonia?
Before I go any further let me explain what a pulmonia actually is because I had no idea before this trip! A pulmonia is Mazatlán's iconic open air taxi — imagine something between a golf cart and a dune buggy, completely open on the sides with a canopy overhead. It's breezy, fun, a little bouncy and absolutely the most enjoyable way to see the city. The name "pulmonia" actually means pneumonia in Spanish — legend has it the vehicles got their nickname because riding in them open air would give you a cold! 😄
Here's something most people don't realize — pulmonias are completely unique to Mazatlán. You won't find them in Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta. They are as much a part of Mazatlán's identity as El Arco is to Cabo San Lucas — and experiencing one is reason enough on its own to look forward to this port. In fact there is even a Pulmonia Monument on the Mazatlán Malecón honoring these iconic vehicles and their place in the city's history. When you ride a pulmonia you're not just getting around — you're participating in a Mazatlán tradition that dates back to 1965!
Meet Ruben — The Heart of Our Mazatlán Day
Ruben was not just a driver — he became one of the highlights of our entire Mazatlán experience. From the moment we climbed into his pulmonia, he narrated the city with genuine passion and made us feel like we were exploring with a local friend rather than taking a tour.
Things Ruben Taught Us About Mazatlán:
✔ Mazatlán hosts one of Mexico’s largest Carnaval celebrations.
✔ The tuna fishing industry plays a huge role in the local economy.
✔ Stone Island has become a popular area where many expats build homes.
✔ After the devastating 1975 hurricane, a seawall was built to help protect the city.
✔ Cars imported from China arrive through Mazatlán’s commercial port.
As for Cabo San Lucas — Ruben had thoughts. "Cabo is more touristy," he told us matter-of-factly, "and it costs more." Coming from a local who knows both cities that felt like high praise for Mazatlán — and based on our own experience I think he's absolutely right.
But Ruben Went Even Further Than That
I want to take a moment to tell you just how far above and beyond Ruben went for us that day — because $20 simply does not cover it.
Throughout our nearly 5 hours together Ruben provided drinks for our group. When he didn't have something on hand he went and bought it for us himself — out of his own pocket. When we needed a bathroom break — and yes public restrooms in Mexico typically require a small fee — Ruben paid for that too without a second thought. He took care of us like we were family, not just tourists passing through his city.
Looking back $20 was not enough. Not even close. But I hope that by sharing his story here and encouraging every single person reading this to search for Pulmonia City Tour Mazatlan with Jesus on Facebook and ask for Ruben — I can pay him back in the best way I know how. Send him your business. He has more than earned it.

La Marea Rooftop — Views Worth the Early Morning
One of our very first stops with Ruben was La Marea Seafood and Beer — a gorgeous rooftop bar and restaurant perched on the cliffs with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. We arrived early in the morning while they were still setting up for the day so we weren't able to sit down for drinks, but we did wander through and take in the stunning space. The "I Love Mazatlán" sign on the living green wall behind the bar is an absolute must-photo moment. The views from that rooftop looking out over the ocean with the cruise ship visible in the distance are simply breathtaking.
Make a note of La Marea for your Mazatlán visit — it looks like the perfect spot for a late morning drink with a view. Just get there after they open!

The Cliff Divers & The Zipline Rescue — Heart-Stopping Moments at Balcones de Loma Linda
Some of the most dramatic and unexpected moments of our entire cruise happened at Balcones de Loma Linda — the cliff diving spot on Mazatlán's rocky coastline. And I mean that in the best possible way!
First — the cliff divers. Before the dive even happened a young man approached our group and explained that his brother was about to dive off the cliff — and that this was their family business. One brother works the crowd while the other launches himself off the cliff into the churning water far below. They make their living entirely from tips.
Doug gave $5 and our friend gave $5 — and then the young man kept working his way through the rest of the crowd until he had collected enough to make the jump worth his brother's while. It was like watching a live crowdfunding campaign on a cliff! 😄 Once the target was hit — down he went. A full backflip off the cliff, plunging into the churning waves below. The rocks, the height, the crashing water — it was genuinely jaw dropping. I managed to catch it on video and the still frame alone looks like something out of a movie.
Please tip the cliff divers generously. They are literally risking their lives to give you an unforgettable moment.
And if that wasn't enough drama for one stop — while we were there we spotted something equally heart-stopping happening on the zipline overhead. A rider had gotten stuck right in the middle of the line — dangling out there above the rocky coastline with nowhere to go! We watched as someone had to zip out to rescue them and bring them back to safety. Everyone watching held their breath! It all ended fine but it was quite the unexpected bonus spectacle — and a good reminder that adventure activities always come with a little unpredictability! 😄
Between the cliff divers below and the zipline rescue above, Balcones de Loma Linda delivered more drama per square foot than anywhere else on our entire cruise!

thrilling sights on the Mexican Riviera! 🌊

El Faro — The Lighthouse on the Hill
Ruben also pointed out El Faro — Mazatlán's iconic lighthouse perched high atop Cerro del Vigía hill. From our vantage point looking up we could see tiny figures of people who had hiked all the way to the top for the panoramic views. The view from up there looking back over the entire city with the cruise ship visible in the port below is absolutely stunning — we captured it in our photos from the hillside and it gives you a completely different perspective on just how beautiful Mazatlán really is.

Old Town Mazatlán — Culture, Art & The Beatles
Ruben took us through the heart of Mazatlán's beautiful historic Old Town — an area of colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and vibrant plazas. Here are the highlights:
The Beatles Abbey Road statues stopped us in our tracks — a full recreation of the famous Abbey Road crossing complete with a red British phone box and a Union Jack Mini Cooper parked nearby. Our group couldn't resist jumping in between the Fab Four for photos. Right next door is the Cavern Club — Mazatlán's own Beatles themed music venue. Doug posed at the entrance looking very pleased with himself! 😄
In the main plaza we were lucky enough to witness an Aztec fire dancer performing in full traditional costume — an enormous feathered headdress, ceremonial clothing and actual fire burning at his waist as he danced. With tourists watching from the plaza steps it was a genuinely powerful and beautiful cultural moment.
We also passed a stunning Virgin of Guadalupe statue absolutely covered in colorful fresh flowers — a reminder of how deeply faith and tradition are woven into everyday life in Mazatlán.
And of course — the colorful FAROLES Mazatlán sign where our friend couldn't resist striking a dramatic pose! 😄
Happy Hour at Garden Lounge & Restaurant
After all that exploring Ruben took us to Garden Lounge & Restaurant for happy hour — and yes, happy hour at around 10am is a perfectly acceptable cruise day activity! 😄 They were running a 2-for-1 drinks special and both drinks arrived at the same time. Doug's verdict on drink strength? Let's just say he was not fully impressed. 😄 But the fried shrimp and fries were delicious and it was a perfect spot to sit, rest our feet and soak in the Mazatlán atmosphere. You can find them on Facebook.
Shopping with Ruben — Markets, Jewelry & More
One of the most unexpectedly fun parts of our day was letting Ruben guide our shopping. He took us to places most cruise passengers never see:
The open flea market was a wonderful browse — our travel companion Patti stocked up on magnets and trinkets for her coworkers, all at very reasonable prices. The fresh food market and seafood market were fascinating to walk through even just as observers — colorful, bustling and completely authentic local life in action.
Two jewelry shops particularly stood out. Michael Gallery Mexico is a beautiful store carrying stunning silver jewelry, margarita glasses, Christmas ornaments, glass figurines, magnets and more. The staff was warm and helpful and they even managed to get my credit card working when others couldn't. Find them at michaelgallerymexico.com — absolutely worth a visit.
Near the Garden Lounge & Restaurant and the Aztec fire dancer plaza I also discovered AD Jewelry Store where I found a stunning opal inlay ring that I absolutely could not leave without. You can find them on Instagram @adjewlerystoremzt. Two very different shops but both wonderful in their own way!
Ruben also pointed out a pharmacy along the way — Mexican pharmacies are well stocked and many medications available only by prescription in the US are available over the counter here at a fraction of the cost. Worth knowing!
Our Mazatlán Verdict
We started our day at 8:44am and didn't wrap up until early afternoon — nearly 5 hours of exploring, laughing, learning and experiencing Mazatlán in the most authentic way possible. And every single moment of it was because of Ruben and Jesus.
If you take nothing else from this post take this: Mazatlán is not just a port stop. It's a real, vibrant, beautiful city with history, culture, incredible food and some of the warmest people we've ever met. Don't spend your Mazatlán day in a touristy bar or on a ship excursion bus. Search for Pulmonia City Tour Mazatlan with Jesus on Facebook, ask for Ruben, tip him well and let him show you his city. You will not regret it for a single second.
Would I go back to Mazatlán? In a heartbeat. And next time I'm going to make sure to connect with my daughter's friend who lives there — because something tells me that's a whole other adventure waiting to happen!
