Upcoming Trip: Cabo, Mazatlán & Puerto Vallarta

This spring, we’re heading to Mexico for a cruise that includes Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta. We’re traveling with another couple who live in Washington, while we’re based in Arizona, so coordinating plans from different locations has become part of how we travel now.

We decided on this cruise after receiving a tax-and-gratuity-only offer directly from the cruise line. Finding opportunities like this has become part of how we approach travel in retirement—staying flexible, watching for value, and choosing trips that feel enjoyable rather than rushed.

Because we’ll be arriving before the cruise departs, we booked a hotel for the night prior to departure. We started by comparing options through Kayak and completed the reservation through one of its booking partners. Using comparison tools first has become our preferred way to plan.

We haven’t booked airfare to Los Angeles yet, while our friends have already finalized theirs. We like allowing ourselves a little flexibility and taking the time to compare options before making a final decision.

Traveling with friends adds an extra layer to trips like this. Sharing the planning process, comparing ideas, and looking forward to time together is just as much a part of the experience as the destinations themselves.

Cabo San Lucas: What We’re Considering This Time

What We’ve Already Experienced in Cabo

On a previous visit, we spent time in Todos Santos, where we enjoyed a memorable meal at Tequila's Sunrise Bar & Grill. The owner focuses on using fresh ingredients and puts his own spin on classic Cadillac margaritas, which made it more than just a stop for a meal—it felt like part of the experience of being there. Like many visitors, we pinned a $1 bill to the wall as a small tradition. It’s one of those details that sticks with you, and it might actually be fun to go back and see if it’s still there.

On another visit, back in Cabo San Lucas, we booked a sail on the TropiCat almost on a whim. They happened to have availability for the six of us, and it turned into one of those unexpectedly memorable experiences. The sails were fully opened as we cruised past El Arco and out into deeper water, where we saw dolphins and even whales breaching in the distance.

Experiences We’re Currently Researching

Snorkeling in Protected Bays

This time, we’re looking at snorkeling options in calmer, protected areas like Santa Maria or Chileno Bay. These areas appeal to us because they don’t require a full-day commitment and offer clear water without needing a high-energy excursion.
